AFTER A QUICK SUPPER of leftover gumbo, Caitlyn decided to read the newspaper that Scott had picked up in town. She gasped when she saw the front page, “Scott, did you see this?”

“See what?”

She pointed to the article, “There was a body found in the bayou.”

Scott took the paper from her, “Let me see that.”

The surrounding air turned to ice as they read the paper. She whispered to Scott, “Do you feel that?”

“Why are you whispering?”

“I don’t know, but I swear the air around us just turned ice cold.” To prove her point, Caitlyn blew out a short burst of air and they watched as it turned into a fine white mist. “Do you think this murder has something to do with the figure we saw down at the bayou?”

“I’m starting to wonder. I know Detective Bertrand though, perhaps I should give him a call.”

Picking up his cell phone, he called Bertrand directly, “Bertrand.”

“Tony, it is Scott. Mon ami, I am renovating that plantation where the dude had the haunted house. Something strange is going on here.”

Bertrand let out a long sigh. This was the last thing he needed on his plate right now. “Look, Scott, I am tied up at the moment, but I can send an officer to check on things for you. You should have known to expect problems. Everyone around here will tell you the ghosts don’t want you messing with the house.”

Scott let out a chuckle, “It’s not the ghosts I’m scared of Tony. Look man, I wouldn’t bother you if I didn’t think it was anything serious. Hell, it may be nothing, but last night we saw a man down by the bayou. When I went to check it out, the person took off. At first, I just thought it was someone snooping around, but I just read the paper about the body being found in the bayou. It got me to thinking that perhaps the killer used this area as his disposal site. I have seen some mighty big alligators here; they may have a few hidey holes in the bend they use. This guy may know that as well.”

Bertrand was all ears now, “Are you sure you saw someone by the bayou? What about a vehicle?”

“I didn’t see a vehicle, but they took off into the woods. If it was a ghost, it wouldn’t have to take off into the woods. Mais non, a ghost could just disappear.”

“If it is okay with you, and the owner, of course, I would like to send someone out in the morning to search the area where you saw the person.”

Scott looked over at Caitlyn, who nodded her head in agreement, “She said that is fine. There is one more thing; we found a secret passageway in the house. It looks as if someone may have recently been in the house.”

“Why don’t you show the officers that tomorrow as well? They can dust for fingerprints.”

As they hung up, Detective Bertrand said a quick prayer that they may have a lead to follow up on finally.
